How Often Should You Clean Your Furnace & Ducts

Regular upkeep for your air ducts and furnace might feel like an elusive task, but at Britcan Furnace and Carpet Cleaners, we’re here to demystify the process and provide you with comprehensive maintenance solutions. Neglecting your furnace and ducts can lead to decreased efficiency, poor indoor air quality, and potential safety hazards. Read on to discover when and how to schedule furnace and duct cleaning in Edmonton and surrounding areas.

How Often Should You Clean Your Furnace & Ducts?

For optimal performance, we recommend scheduling furnace and duct cleaning at intervals of 2 to 3 years. However, certain factors may necessitate more frequent attention. If you have an older furnace, a large family, pets, respiratory issues, or notice signs of decreased performance, consider more frequent maintenance to ensure a smoothly running system and excellent indoor air quality.

Comprehensive Furnace & Duct Cleaning (every 2-3 years)

Furnace and Duct cleaning is a comprehensive service designed to keep your heating system in top shape.  Ideally this should be done every 2 years.  3+ years if you have one of the 11MERV rated reusable filters. Ideally this should be done right before you turn your furnace back on for the winter, assuming you’re like me and turn it off during the summer.  Here’s what to expect from your furnace cleaning:

Protective Measures:  We start by placing protective coverings in the work area.  Protecting your home is always top of mind.  It is also important to us that we leave your space cleaner than how we found it.

Thorough Inspection:  Register covers are removed, and a detailed inspection of the ductwork is conducted.

Deep Cleaning:  Air ducts, registers, and vents are thoroughly vacuumed, and the furnace blower area is meticulously cleaned.

Disinfecting:  There is a build up of dust, oil and other home contaminants in your ducts.  We recommend the heating ducts are treated with a powerful disinfectant spray for enhanced cleanliness.  All the air in your house is continually circulated through your ducts and ensuring a clean environment for you and your family is important

Gas Furnace Maintenance (preferably every year)

Maintenance is also important.  Here’s what should be included when hiring a company to do your furnace inspection:

  1. Burner and Surrounding Area: Vacuum the burners and clean the surrounding furnace area.
  2. Flue Pipes Inspection: Flue pipes are cleaned, and we check for rust or leakage.
  3. Blower Maintenance: The furnace blower is thoroughly cleaned.
  4. Component Examination: Inspect the flame sensor, fuel line, pilot light, thermocouple, and check the gas pressure.
  5. Condensate Line Inspection: The condensate line is examined and cleared of any clogs.
  6. Heat Exchanger Check: We inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, corrosion, or blockage.
  7. Lubrication: Moving parts are lubricated for smooth operation.
  8. Safety Controls Test: The thermostat and safety controls are tested and calibrated as necessary.
  9. Gas or Electrical Connections: Test and adjust gas or electrical connections as needed.
  10. Repair Recommendations: Any necessary repairs are identified and recommended.

Dirt & Debris Build-Up

Regularly changing air filters is crucial, and if you notice excessive dirt or debris around vents, it’s time for a new air filter and duct cleaning.

Yellow Furnace Flames

Unusual flame colors, such as orange or yellow, signal potential hazards. Emergency furnace maintenance is needed to address dirty burners or flame sensors.

Frequent Furnace Repairs

If your furnace requires frequent repairs, it may indicate a need for cleaning. Professional cleaning can save you money on repairs and extend your furnace’s lifespan.

Furnace Turns On & Off Quickly (Short Cycling):  This could be due to a clogged filter or a dirty flame sensor, requiring prompt furnace maintenance.

Furnace Blows Cold Air: Check the air filter and condensate line for blockages. Professional cleaning can restore proper heating.
